Standard event times 1.00pm - 5.00pm, (unless shown otherwise).

Some events are organised by the Leicester Museums Technology Association in conjunction with Leicester City Museums Service and some events are organised solely by Leicester City Museums Service. All site admission charges go to Leicester City Museums Service. The events listed below are subject to availability and weather. Due to health and safety issues certain areas of the museum have a restriction as to the number of visitors allowed in at a time.

Parking on the National Space Centre car park is £3.00 per vehicle.
 

Beam Engine Steaming Events

Full guided tour of the Beam Engine House are available at some Beam Engine Running events, including the basement whilst one of the beam engines is running. (The tours are not suitable for children under 10). To download a list of the Beam Engine Steaming days click here. Numbers for guided tours are limited so please pre-book your ticket in advance to avoid disapointment. Tickets available from all Leicester Museum sites, "Visit Leicester" in Gallowtree Gate or email to aps@leicester.gov.uk to avoid disappointment.

Steam With the Team
Saturday 27th January 2018

Admission to the museum is free. For the guided tour of the museum which takes approximately 45 minutes there is a charge of £5.00 per person. Tour not suitable for children under 10. (Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park).

Your chance to take a full guided tour of the Beam Engine House, including the basement whilst one of the beam engines is running. (Not suitable for children under 10). Tours at 11.00am, 12.00 midday, 2.00pm and 3.00pm. The LMTA café will be open for refreshments.

Numbers per tour are limited so please pre-book your ticket in advance. Tickets available from all Leicester Museum sites, "Visit Leicester" in Gallowtree Gate or email to aps@leicester.gov.uk to avoid disappointment.

Steam Toys in Action
Sunday 4th February 2018 1.00pm - 5.00pm

Admission Adults £3.00 accompanied children free (Plus small charge for train rides. Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park).

This will be our 28th year of this popular event – the biggest gathering of steam toys in Europe. 100’s of toy steam engines, boats and trains will be on display. See the museum’s collection of heritage vehicles on show and one of the massive beam engines working. Leicester’s only narrow gauge railway will be giving rides. Enjoy a hot cuppa and a cake in the LMTA café, a perfect end to a perfect day.

Children's Half Term Holiday Events
Sunday 11th to Sunday 18th February 2018 11.00am - 3.00pm
Admission to museum free (£1.50 for an activity bag)

The theme for all of this week is "Land / Sea / Air" so why not join us and take part in one of our self led activities.

LMTA Café & Train rides are only available on Tuesday 13th February. (Small additional charge for train ride).

British Science Week of Activities
Saturday 17th March 2018 11.00am - 3.00pm
Admission free (Activities £1.50 plus a small charge for train rides.)
Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park)

This year's theme is "Exploration & Discovery". Bring along your own 2 litre empty pop bottle and make it into a rocket and then launch it from the museum site.

Children's Easter Activities
Sunday 25th March to Sunday 8th April 2018, 11.00am - 3.00pm.
Admission to museum free ( £1.50 for activities & small charge for Train Ride. Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park )

Make an Easter Poppy and Scatter some Poppy seeds on the museum site in remembrance of all those who lost their lives in conflict and return later in the year to see the poppies in flower. Enjoy a picnic in the museum grounds on the tables provided.


Spring Railway Day
Saturday 7th April 2018, 11.00am - 3.00pm.
Admission to museum free ( Small charge for Train Ride. Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park )

Poppy themed Railway Day. Refreshments available in the LMTA café, or enjoy your own picnic outside on the tables provided

Emergency Services Appreciation Day
Sunday 29th April 2018, 1.00pm - 5.00pm.
Admission £3.50 Accompanied children free ( Small charge for Train Ride. )
Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park


Come and meet the people who we rely on to help us in an emergency and see their vehicles from the past and present, have a go with the stirrup pump and have a photograph taken with a fire hose.

Picnic tables and the museum lawns are available so that you can bring your own picnic for a great day out. Refreshments also available in the LMTA café.

May Day Railway Day
Saturday 5th May 2018, 11.00am - 4.00pm.
Admission free ( Small charge for Train Ride )

Take a ride on the museum's narrow gauge railway and enjoy a picnic in the museum grounds or visit the LMTA café.

Children's Spring Break - Art Amongst the Loos
Sunday 27th May to Thursday 31st May 2018, 11.00am - 3.00pm.
Admission to museum free ( £1.50 for activity Pack & a Small charge for Train Ride. )



On Tuesday 29th May the LMTA café will be open for refreshments and the Site Narrow Gauge Railway will be running subject to availability & weather.
Teddy Bears Picnic Railway Day
Saturday 2nd June 2018, 11.00am - 4.00pm.
Admission Free ( Small charge for Train Ride )

Free rides on the railway if you bring your teddy.

Picnic tables and the museum lawns are available so that you can bring your own picnic and teddy for a great day out. Refreshments available.


Urban Steam Festival.
Saturday 23rd June 2018, 1.00pm - 5.00pm &
Sunday 24th June 2018. 12.00 noon - 5.00pm.

Admission Adults £3.50 accompanied children free ( Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park. Small charge for train rides).

Why not come to our annual "Urban Steam Festival" and see demonstrations of rural crafts, steam traction engines, road rollers, vintage vehicles, live music, the craft tent and our magnificent working Gimson beam engines.

The ever popular LMTA café will be serving refreshments throughout the afternoon on both days. Picnic tables are also available within the museum ground's.


Print and Ride Railway Day
Saturday 7th July 2018 11.00am - 4.00pm.
Admission to museum free ( Small charge for train rides )

Do you know how to use a typewriter? Come and have a go and then make and print your own railway ticket, then use it to ride on our narrow gauge railway and afterwards visit the ever popular LMTA café for some well deserved refreshments.



Twelfth Night Presented by HandleBards

Children's Summer Activities

Railway Gala Day
Saturday 4th August 2018 11.00am - 4.00pm.
Admission to museum free (Small charge for Train Ride.) .

Why not come along and ride on the only public narrow gauge railway in Leicester, Ride behind our very own Bagnall steam locomotive built in 1918 for supplying the troops in the WW1 trenches. View the other site narrow gauge locomotives which will be out on show. Refreshments available at the LMTA café.

Children's Activity Railway Day
Tuesday 14th August 2018 11.00am - 3.00pm.
Admission to museum free (Small charge for Train Ride.) .

Come and ride behind one of our railway engines on the main line and have a go at the people powered railway locos.

Seaside Fun Day
Sunday 9th September 2018 12.00noon - 5.00pm
Admission charges: Adult £3.50, Children / Concessions £2.50, Family £8.00
(Plus small charge for train rides, fairground and donkey rides. Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park )

This is our 10th Seaside Day at the museum, so enjoy the Sun, Sea and Sand once again, relax in a deck chair or bring along your swimsuit and join us on the museum’s beach, while the children build sand castles and waterways before the autumn is upon us. Experience all the sights and sounds of a traditional day at the seaside without the travelling but don't forget to take a trip on our narrow gauge railway.

Enjoy some refreshments from the beach or the indoor cafeterias.



Film Festival
Saturday 22nd September 2018, 11.00am - 4.00pm.
Admission to museum free (Plus small charge for Railway Rides).

Refreshments available also picnic tables in the grounds.


Slot Car Railway Day
Saturday 13th October 2018, 11.00am - 4.00pm.
Admission to museum free (Small charge for train rides).

Come and watch the thrill of slot car racing and maybe have a go yourself. Refreshments available in the LMTA café.

Penny Dreadful
Saturday 20th October 2018.
Admission prices, and times to be confirmed.

Chills and chuckles from Sweeney Todds partner in crime, Mrs Lovett. This orginal one woman show is suitable for the whole family.



Ghosts & Ghouls Children's Week
Sunday 21st October to Sunday 28th October 2018 11.00am - 3.00pm
Museum Admission FREE (£1.50 for activity pack)


Come along to the museum and explore the unusual surroundings of the Abbey Pumping Station looking for that friendly ghost

The site narrow gauge railway will be operating on Tuesday 23rd October and the LMTA café will be open. Small charge for train rides

Ghostly Engineer and other Stories
Saturday 27th October 2018 Tours at 7.00pm, 8.00pm and 9.00pm Pre booking essential
Admission to the museum is free. For the guided tour of the museum which takes approximately 45 minutes there is a charge of £5.00 per person. Tour not suitable for children under 10. (Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park).

Come along to an evening of chilling story telling in our engine house. Discover the Ghostly Engineer and other tales whilst one of the mighty beam engines turns above your head or below your feet. Wrap up warm and wear sensible shoes as the basement can be damp and has steep steps. Refreshments available in the LMTA café.

Christmas Toys and Steam Day
Sunday 2nd December 2018 1.00pm - 5.00pm
Admission charges: Adult £3.50, Children / Concessions £2.50, Family £8.00. ( Parking available on the National Space Centre Car park. Small charge for train rides). .

Start the festive season with a visit to the Abbey Pumping Station Museum. Enjoy listening to the Christmas music whilst taking in the festive environment. When the cold starts to bite come into the warmth and enjoy the refreshments in the LMTA café.

Christmas would not be Christmas without a visit to the APS Steam Day!

Steam Toys in Action

This is our 29th year of this popular event – See our engines in steam and enjoy the many miniature steam engines, boats and trains on display. Leicester’s only narrow gauge railway will be giving rides. Enjoy a hot cuppa and a cake in the LMTA café, a perfect end to a perfect day.
